Highland Stories

John Alasdair Macdonald is a part-time student at the University of the Highlands and Islands having started back in 2010 when he enrolled for a Scottish History degree. Now in the final year of PhD study, he combines his research with his day job as a private tour guide.

His research has brought to life so many fascinating stories of forgotten Highlanders – such as Malcolm Macpherson of Phones, a fierce Jacobite who joined Charles Edward Stuart on his attempt to reach London to depose the Hanoverian monarch during the Rising... yet barely thirteen years later was gladly received by that very same King and cheered throughout the streets of London as the 'Grand Old Highlander'!

From Summer 2025, a series of podcast episodes will be available to share the stories of many of these forgotten Scottish Highlanders.
